Placing organic materials (food, paper, plant trimmings) into landfills produces methane gas, a greenhouse gas with global warming potential more than 60 times greater than carbon dioxide. Adding compost to the soil increases the ability of the soil to retain water, reduces erosion, and helps with carbon sequestration. Compost is also a natural fertilizer and weed killer, thus reducing the need for chemical fertilizers and herbicides. Sustain O’Kane, Weir Gulch Gardens, and Scraps are teaming up together to pilot a curbside composting program. For $25 per month, Scraps will collect a 6-gallon compost container each week (greenhouse gas equivalent to taking one car off the road per year!). Scraps also allows households to pair up and share the cost and compost bin.
